Where the Jobs are - Williamson County, TX - Rated #14 by CNN Money
July 21st, 2009 4:20 PM

According to a CNN Money article dated July 2009, Williamson County is one of the top counties in the US for Job Growth.  In a tough economy, plentiful job opportunities are key to making a great place to live.  25 Counties have experienced the most job growth over the last eight years and Williamson County was one of those 25.

Job Growth from 2000-2008 was 53.2%.  Williamson County has seen its population more than double in the last 10 years, thanks to its location just north of Austin.  While a large percentage of residents commute into the city, major employers like Dell, Walmart and Sears have come to the area bringing many new jobs along.

While farming still remains the the backbone of the fertile terrain, the health care industry is quickly sprouting roots.  Three new hospitals opened in the last two years in Williamson County and a nursing school affiliated with Texas A&M is in the works.

The public school systems in the cities of Round Rock, Cedar Park and Leander are also some of the county's largest employers.

It's a Great Place to be!

Heather Brown Named RE/MAX Agent of the Quarter

Austin, TX – June 19, 2009 - RE/MAX of Texas has announced that Heather Brown of RE/MAX Austin Skyline has been named as an “Agent of the Quarter” for the second quarter of 2009 by the RE/MAX Reporter Magazine. Heather Brown is in love with Austin, and she sells the Texas capital perfectly, even over the phone. “We have a fantastic quality of life in Austin, great schools (one of the factors that brought her family there in 1995), beautiful lakes and hill country,” she says. “We’re the live music capital of the world, have great restaurants and activities everywhere. There is always something to do here.”

Heather’s passion for Austin is contagious and is no doubt part of her success in real estate. Licensed in 2006, Heather celebrated her three-year anniversary on June 1st, and all three years were with RE/MAX. “A career in real estate just made sense for me,” Heather relates. “I started out as an onsite sales agent for an Austin builder and then managed marketing for my husband’s mortgage company. Then I spoke with Craig Noling and Ron Binkley at RE/MAX Austin Skyline. They said that first I should operate from their office and have a chance to learn from the veterans at the company, catch overflow business and get referrals. This was a great help to me in the beginning.”

Craig and Ron then suggested that Heather attend Peak Performance. They warned her to do this at the beginning of her career, explaining that she would become to busy once business picked up. “Peak Performance made all the difference,” she says. “I’ve implemented so many of the techniques I learned there, and I need to go back. But I’ve become too busy. In fact, I pass this advice on to new agents: Go to Peak Performance EARLY.”

Another piece of advice Heather gives is to adapt to the needs to the market. In growing her business, Heather has recently branched out into leasing. “It’s a good supplement to my business while the market is down. But Austin has been receiving great press in magazines (Forbes) and on television (The Today Show) and agents should be prepared for the next market turn.” A member of 100% Club, Heather has a short-term goal of reaching the Platinum production club level.

Valence Chooses Leander and Plans to Employ about 4,000 People
July 2nd, 2009 12:57 PM

Valence announced it wants to build a battery manufacturing facility in Leander.  The proposed facility will be more than 1.5 million square feet and will employ about 4,000 people.

The implications of this project on the psychology of business in central Texas and alternative energy is huge.  This will enable Central Texas to move to the next level of economic evolution.

it's the evolution of green and alternative energy at the highest level.  It's lightweight batteries powering heavy machines, making these machines lighter yet still powerful.  It's a jump int future technology for Segways, golf carts and even automobiles and double decker buses.

Ross Goolsby, the Valence CFO says, " We're about two or three years away from seeing automobiles powered by our battery everyday on the road here in the United States".  "This year we may see a few Fed Ex trucks in New York that are powered by these batteries.

Valence has submitted a grant application to the U.S. Department of Energy under the Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative.  The facility would cost nearly $600 million.

The batteries are lithium iron magnesium phosphate batteries (LiFeMgPO4), which is the power of lithium combined with the safety of phosphate.  Valence develops and manufactures advanced LiFeMgPO4 materials, designs and manufactures programmable lithium iron magnesium phosphate packs and provides application engineering integration services.

Valence currently has a manufacturing facility in China that produces batteries worldwide for Segways used for civil service in Italy and double decker buses in London.  The company is also in the core market segments for energy storage solutions for motive, stationary, industrial and military uses.

The 20 year old company is headquartered in Austin.

All 3 Leander ISD High Schools made the cut in Newsweek Magazine's top 1,537 High Schools in America.  Cedar Park High School earned a ranking of 697, charting the highest in the Leander Independent School District.  Vista Ridge was ranked no. 1,335 and Leander High was No. 1,447.  All public schools are ranked according to a ratio which calculates the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors.  All of the schools on the list have an index of at least 1.000 and are in the top 6 percent of public schools measured this way.
